Wood preserver is designed to be applied on freshly sawn or sanded wood. You’ll get the best out of it if you sand down whatever wood you use it on, or at least pressure-wash and scrub it. Areas that have been affected by mould, algae or fungi should be treated with Barrettine Mould and Mildew Cleaner Varnish, by contrast, is a topcoat. It won’t protect the wood on its own. Same goes for paint, wax and wood oil. So, if you want your woodwork to last, start with a few coats of wood preserver, wait until they’re fully dry, then go ahead with the varnish or other decorative topcoat of your choice. Can I use wood preserver on its own, without a topcoat?

Although the solvent content of this product can perish the washers and hoses of some spray systems, it can still be a time and cost effective way to treat large areas. We recommend that if using a spray system you try to complete the project in one day. This said however, depending on the type and brand of sprayer, it may take longer than this. Cleaning Equipment Ensure that wooden surfaces to be treated with Barrettine Wood Preserver are clean, dry and free from surface dirt, debris and other surface contaminates. New Bare Wood Apply by brush onto timber at a rate of 5 m2 per litre. Apply in 2 – 3 coats depending on the porosity of the wood species. Do not apply if rain is forecast in the next 48 hours to allow time for Roxil Wood Preserver to dry and the application of a top coat.

If protecting the natural colour of the wood is important, use the clear preservative then overcoat with Osmo UV Protection Oil Extra or Fiddes Exterior High Build Wood Oil.

But it does a sterling job of repelling water, sun-fading, rot, insects and other wood-worriers all by itself, as well as bringing out the natural grain of the wood. You can also get a 5l version.Whatever colour or non-colour you go for, at least you won’t have to put up with the fluorescent yellowy green colour of creosote, which used to be the only wood preserver you could get. Thankfully creosote – noxious, toxic and highly flammable – is no longer sold to the general public. Are wood preservers all solvent-based? I’m worried about fumes indoors. Our main complaint is that there’s no clear version, so you have to choose a colour – and the waterproof finish is difficult to paint over if you don’t like the shade. The six colours are lovely, though, and include Forest Oak, Autumn Gold and Silver Copse. Always do a test area before starting any project and follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Only apply in temperatures of between 10°C and 30°C. Shake or stir well prior to and during application to ensure a consistent colour.
