About this deal

There’s a fantastic marzipan smoothness holding the whole thing together. As that implies, there’s a touch of sweetness, but that’s balanced by pepper and spice and, yeah, a bit of fire. Lime comes through towards the end, cutting the creaminess rather nicely. That sounds as if there’s a lot going on (which there is), but this is far from a try-hard gin. It’s pretty clean and subtle, in fact. I think that subtlety betrays a great deal of careful tasting and balancing on the part of the makers. I give it grade A for a Martini.

Copperfield London Dry Gin Volume Two is juniper-led and exceptionally smooth with fragrant floral notes and subtle hints of spice. Botanicals include Pink Peppercorns, Cubeb Berries, Rose Petals, Hibiscus, Elderflower and Lavender. The collaboration exemplifies exciting British innovation and creativity, bringing together two neighbouring, Surrey-based businesses. It also highlights how hydrogen could support decarbonisation of the UK’s 400 plus gin distilleries and more broadly the food and beverage industry to meet net zero targets. So. A fine martini and a fine G&T. Indeed, I’d go so far as to say that Copperfield Gin is the kind of thing of which you could happily partake every night and not get bored.Pop the orange in a small pan and cover with water. Bring to the boil the simmer for 30 minutes, or until tender. Keep the water level is topped up. Our ethos is traditional,” says Chris. “Our gins to date have been classic London dry gins, made with plenty of juniper – that’s important to us. We also want them to be smooth enough to drink as a sipping gin, but robust enough to stand up to a premium tonic!”

That balance I was just talking about? That stands Copperfield in pretty good stead when it comes to the ultimate test. It makes a martini that’s squarely classical, rather traditional. Which I like. Copperfield gin is hand-bottled and hand-labelled. Its distinctive book-shaped bottle perfectly fits the hand for pouring. It is embellished with a stunning illustration of interwoven botanicals overlaid with rich copper foiling and pays homage to book covers from the late nineteenth century. It is elegant and utterly unmistakable. Remove the orange from the saucepan and save 250ml of the cooking liquid. Add the sugar and stir until dissolved. Copperfield lends itself wonderfully to classic martinis as the gin’s delicate floral notes blend well with aromatic vermouths. The ‘perfect serve’ (the best possible way of lengthening the drink, simply and consistently, whether in a bar or at home) In line with gins of the 18 th century just 10 carefully selected botanicals are used (juniper, angelica, orris root, liquorice, cubeb berries, lemon peel, elderflower, caraway, cardamom and coriander). So Copperfield London Gin is rather good. It’s fairly classic, I’d say, and balanced — not trying to do anything too funky. Its flavour isn’t dominated by a particular characteristic, and as such, it’s a versatile beast. So let’s put it through the usual tests, shall we? Copperfield Gin and Tonic To make each batch, they combine their brilliant Hills & Harbour gin with a full wheelbarrow of smoked pineapple and burnt oranges to create a 40% ABV sweet spirit that can be turned bitter, balanced or sweet simply by adding tonic, soda or lemonade respectively. Copperfield London Dry Gin Volume Three is juniper-led and exceptionally smooth with traditional winter spice notes and subtle hints of bitter orange. Working with specialist spirits branding agency, Stranger & Stranger, the ‘Social Distillery’ has created something which is the envy of many. They wanted to produce something which depicts the truly stunning scenery found on the island – and what a job they’ve done!

Chris and Katherine are avid collectors of rare and antiquarian books. Surrey Copper Distillery is inspired by literature, and Cooper’s book was the first manual to the art of distillation and remains an important reference work to this day.
