About this deal

The foundation of any angler's arsenal is a reliable sea fishing rod. When it comes to sea fishing, you'll want a rod that can handle the unique challenges of saltwater environments. Saltwater rods are typically more robust and corrosion-resistant than their freshwater counterparts. Premium Reels The 525Mag4 spool is forged and machined aluminium, so it’s ultra-light offering several advantages. Being light, it takes less inertia and power from the lead in flight, so the lead flies further, and the reel casts further. Also, on initial release and in free flight, the spool is more controllable by the braking effect and suffers less from overrunning due to the revolving weight in the spool being less. These spools are also tough and are highly unlikely to suffer from line crushing pressure when big fish are fought and retrieved on very tight lines from a long distance out. Improved features include an instant finger adjustable external extended magnetic braking system knob, extra strong CNC gear technology and live spindle with free floating spool, making the spool totally free from restriction and drag. The 525 is the perfect size for all round beach fishing situations, but that does not mean it is limited to clean ground by any means. The increased line capacity of the 525 means that heavier breaking strains of line can be used and this combined with improved gearing means it is the perfect reel for heavier ground work as well as uptide and light-medium down tide boat fishing applications.

There are 6+1 shielded stainless steel ball bearings for optimum smoothness. The spool bearings are premium oiled and the main and pinion gear are constructed from durable stainless steel. The reel frame is made from lightweight graphite but is very strong and shows no distortion under heavy load. Being graphite, the inevitable small scratches will appear and turn a lighter grey than the main frame, but metal side-plates would scratch just as easily, so this takes nothing away from the reel.

When in free spool mode, this ensures easy, trouble free, long distance casting. The attractive cool blue trim finish to this latest addition to the Penn Mag stable means that once you have landed your bait somewhere on the horizon, this reel is going to attract some enviable glances from your neighbouring angler.

The previous Mag3 series and this new model 525Mag4 series have incorporated stainless steel main gear and pinion gears. This is a logical and smart move by Penn, with the stainless gearing dramatically improving the winching power and strength of these reels. Stainless gears will feel slightly harsher in a heavy retrieve than a bronze gear would, but the benefit in strength is massive and this is a real selling point for the 525Mag4 series. The Jim's Reel Shop Power Handle is longer than the standard handle and has two attachment positions to mount to the reel.Position one is 74mm from the centre of the handle knob to the centre of the handle bushing, the attachment point The 515 MAG4 is perfect for targeting tough ground bass as well as general beach work, but with its greater line capacity the 525 MAG4 is the reel to choose for long range beach and mixed ground fishing. The inboard spool bearing are premium oiled allowing the spool to spin freely on the floating spindle. We have been asked by many customers to supply a larger handle for the MAG4 reels, with a Rugby ball shaped handle knob

The standard handle is 50mm long, from the centre of the handle knob to the handle bushing, the attachment point Both multipliers are fitted with an adjustable, magnetic brake system with extended adjustment knob for superior control. The adjustment knob will make it easier to adjust the drag to accommodate the fishing conditions on that given day and allows experience casters to refine the cast during mid-cast.

Daiwa Saltiga 20 review

The graphite frame has extra strengthening between the reel foot and cross bars. This adds rigidity and prevents the risk of any flex in the frame when under load or during powerful casts. Only the two inboard bearings in the spool affect spool rotational speed. While the shaft itself rotates in a pair of bearings, these bearings do NOT effect spool speed, only coming into play when the spool is under load, ie retrieving a fish. First up for me was some casting with the Mixed Ground rod with the six-ounce (170g) rating. Using a multiplier, I started with a simple overhead thump which was okay, but much preferred a steady swing with a reasonably long drop. There is plenty of power to release in the second half of the blank, and once compressed you can hit some really good distances. The handle is made from a heavier gauge metal to give extra strength, the soft grip T knob is comfortable to hold even with wet hands
