About this deal

The dialogue is far better written than in McNeill's (apparently) more popular books, and while Thorpe simply does not have the verbal artistry of Dembski-Bowden (sp? The characters were well laid out, the plot proceeded very well, and I thought that everything was explained well and wrapped up nicely. It sets the stage for many things to come, and even answered some questions as to the Emperor's whereabouts and what happened to the Remembrancers within the Loyalist Legions.

It's a well traveled tale, starting in Istvaan, moving to Terra and finally to the Raven Guard's world of Deliverance. The exception to this is the involvement of the Alpha Legion and their sabotage of the project, which is interesting but as with the main story just piqued my desire for information on what happens to the Raven Guard and the Alpha Legion after the events of this book. It is fitting for the Lord of Ravens in my eyes, and never done to the extent that it would reach into the comical.

While Fulgrim is absolutely amazing and so much better-written than his other works it makes me suspicious, it would have been better if a skilled author had attempted it. Marcus Valerius, now promoted and in charge of a new cohort of Therion soldiers after his last group was sacrificed as a diversion to escape Isstvan, takes the brunt of the Emperor's Children resistance until the Raven Guard launch their planned attack and take control of the fortress. Die Verluste sind so schwerwiegend dass die Raven Guard nicht mehr effektiv gegen Horus und seine Verbündeten vorgehen kann. And don't get me started on the half assed attempt to give the Raven Guard a meaningful victory at the end in maybe a dozen pages max. Deliverance Lost is not just for fans of the Raven Guard - Corax's attempt to reconstitute his Legion with the aid of the Emperor is probably required reading for anyone watching the Horus heresy evolve.

As usual this is a Heresy story that balances on a knife edge between hope and tragedy and while you suspect what's going to happen, you are never quite sure. This was the first novel that features the Raven Guard as the main characters, and previously Corax had only briefly appeared in past books - during the events of the Dropsite Massacre. This might be explained somewhere in the lore and I haven't reached that point yet, but it really spoils the entire setting a bit. As the Horus Heresy divides the Imperium, Corax and his few remaining Raven Guard escape the massacre at Isstvan V.

This entry had all of those things - it even had a brief encounter with the Emperor, which is always exciting (so long as they keep them brief)! He receives intelligence from one of the undercover Alpha Legionnaires about the Primarch Project and begins preparations to use the tech-guild forces as a distraction to steal the gene-technology. He (usually) listens to the counsel of his subordinates and has plenty of time for the "mortals" who serve with his Legion, counting some of them as very close personal friends. The Raven Guard simply do not stand on ceremony, and they are allowed a fair degree of lateral thinking, which causes Corus some headaches towards the end but introduces tension and drama that simply couldn't happen with any other Legion.

Ever since book three I have been obsessed with Corax and now finally fifteen books later he has his own novel. Only one thing really bothered me here: For being a primarch that supposedly has exceptional patience (which one has to have to wage the type of war that the Raven Guard excel at), Corax seemed to be overly impetuous and prone to sudden outbursts.

Deliverance Lost tells you more about how the Alpha Legion works than the book devoted to the Alpha Legion. The Raven Legion was one of the three legions that were in the Isstvan Dropsite Massacre during the Horus Heresy. He personally is hurt and angry from these betrayals, causing Corax’s emotions and decisions to be unclear and irrational. The plot itself and the Alpha Legion shenanigans were quite interesting and the conclusion was kinda cool but it was too little too late.

It talks of the leader of the Raven Guard, and is the first book to really focus itself around the Raven Guard. And while this story is obviously a sequel on Raven's Flight, it is at the same time a sequel on Legion. Wer allerdings epische Schlachten wie in 'Battle Of The Space Marines' sucht wird allerdings sein Glück woanders suchen müssen. Gav is published by Angry Robot books where you can find his epic swords-and-sandals fantasy saga gathered in the omnibus collection entitled Empire of the Blood. I like the Raven Guard, I like the entries that focus on the Legions themselves, and I like the entries that have less fighting and more macro-level developments. Guided by the prophetic dreams of Praefector Marcus Valerius Branne left his post to rescue the survivors.
