I have to say I was becoming increasingly fond of Harry and Jim who seems to have become Harry's right hand man over a very short time.

This is a very common trope, and somewhat overused, but one that works well if the author can get the feeling of the Yorkshire village just right. I also take exception when certain story aspects are glossed over, like how did sickly George have the strength to get Martha from their house into her car ?
