Maria Lúcia Petit, a teacher, far-left militant and communist guerrilla, was a member of the Communist Party of Brazil ( PCdoB) and the Guerrilha do Araguaia. She was one of the 492 people who were killed by the notorious Brazilian hitman Julio Santana (as well as Nativo da Natividade). Rienits's film began as a television drama produced by the BBC in 1950. After it aired, Anglo-Amalgamated Films approached Rienits with a view to re-filming it and releasing it as a feature film: it was released in cinemas in 1951. Both versions were called Assassin for Hire, and both cast the same actor in the lead role of Antonio Riccardi. But it so happened that Tony had a young brother, Seppi, whom he intended to turn into a violinist in the Menuhin class. A nice lad Seppi, even though he did turn out to be Tony's Achilles' heel. Nativo da Natividade, a well-known union leader from the Center-West of Brazil (who was originally a rural worker), he was one of the 492 people who were killed by the notorious Brazilian hitman Julio Santana. What this potboiler had going for it was some nice B&W shots of the dark streets of London and through Sydney Tafler’s melodramatic performance, it showed how a killer can be cold-blooded while taking care of business and yet be a devoted family man. Even though Tony’s love was misguided, the killer shows he can be human. The “B” film had good production values and a satisfying but improbable story to tell. The radio play followed the same plot as its predecessors. A contemporary reviewer summarises the plot as follows: The television film Assassin for Hire was screened by the BBC in September 1950 with Sidney Tafler in the lead. The inspector gets his chance to follow his philosophy when a Mr.Tyler is murdered outside a cafe wearing a camel’s hair overcoat. The bullet comes from the same gun used in the other assassinations, which leads the inspector to believe that it is Tony who did the hit. As a coincidence, Guiseppi is in the cafe wearing the same kind of coat and is drunk because he is upset that his brother has arranged for a concert in a prominent recital hall even though he is not ready to perform at that level.
