About this deal

In User mode, after dialing in calibrated settings, I measured 102 nits in the center of my 100-inch, 0.6 gain UST compatible screen (Epson SilverFlex Ultra). That's almost as bright as a Dolby Cinema commercial theater (108 nits) and well above the brightness of IMAX theaters (80 nits).

Connections: 2x HDMI (2.0, ARC), 3x USB (1x media, 1x optional WiFi, 1x power supply), 1x optical digital out, 1x RS-232c For this test of the BenQ V6050 4K laser projector, we watched several 4K HDR movies, including Le Mans 66, Mad Max: Fury Road and Avatar. The very good HDR management and the well calibrated colorimetry of the BenQ V6050 perfectly highlight the splendid photography of the movie by James Mangold. Brightness and contrast Thanks to its very bright laser lamp (3000 lumens), the BenQ V6050 can project a legible image in the middle of the day, provided that you draw the curtains a little or project on a technical screen such as the Lumene Movie Palace UHD 4K Extra Bright projection screen. You move the projector left or right to centre the image, and there are adjustable feet to level it.There's a test pattern to help you setup the image, and while focus is automatic, in the Installation sub-menu is a motorised focus control for fine tuning. You can choose between different projector positions, and there's a keystone correction control, which is best avoided because the processing and scaling robs the image of fine detail. There’s an eye protection motion sensor that shuts down the laser light source should a pet, child or anyone else for that matter get too close and put their head in front of the lens. This is a useful safety feature, but didn’t appear to be on by default, so it’s worth selecting if you have kids. The sunroof on the top of the V6050 automatically closes when the projector is not in use, avoiding dust build-up and exposing the lens. When in use the roof will open automatically. Motion Sensor for Eye Protection With a projection ratio of 0.25, this BenQ V6000 projector is really very close to the wall. A 100 inch image requires the projector to be barely 22 cm from the wall, for the smallest possible image, 70 inches, it is as little as 7 cm. In the latter case, it may be a bit more difficult to connect the HDMI cables. Compared to Blu-ray, HD streaming and cable TV are more of a mixed bag for quality, but you can't blame the projector for revealing flaws in the source material. For example, with HD streaming movies (Netflix, Vudu), I sometimes saw banding and digital noise in the shadows that disappeared when I switched to UHD, but not always. On the plus side, the projector handles motion well—no matter the source resolution—with minimal blurring and no ghosting. For example, with sports, you'll easily follow the action and see what's going on during action scenes in shows and movies. The V7050i features five SDR picture modes—Bright, Bright Cinema, Filmmaker Mode, DCI-P3, and User. It also sports two HDR picture modes, HDR10 and the Filmmaker Mode found on some other projectors these days that optimizes the image for compatible movies. It also offers four Color Temperature presets (Native, Cool, Normal and Warm). Finding the optimum combination of these two settings is key to getting the most out of this BenQ.

Brightness Uniformity. Perceptually speaking, the picture looks very uniform, and any vignetting is not noticeable. There's also no hot-spotting to speak of. According to my meter, uniformity is 77%.

A single-chip DLP projector adds color using a spinning wheel composed of red, green and blue segments, and this approach has both benefits and side effects. On the plus side, using a single chip results in a pin-sharp image, though the spinning color wheel can cause some people to see color fringing (rainbow) artefacts. The V6050 has a big chassis and we’re surprised there’s nothing more complex here than a pair of forward-facing speakers made up of tweeters and mid/bass cones. The sides of the projector, which could have been used to shoot out more sound, house the large vents that keep this UST cool and generally running fairly quietly. Drop down to 1080p with Captain America: Civil War on Blu-ray and the general look and feel is on a par with the higher-resolution picture. Given that it matches the panel’s native resolution, there’s no kind of pixel-shifting or scaling required. There’s less colour processing to worry about and it’s also easier for user calibration. We keep the contrast setting near the middle to maintain some comparable dynamism to the HDR performance. The model by Samsung projects an overall more flattering image with brighter, more saturated colors, even in cinema mode. Whether you like it or not is a matter of taste… The audio section of the Samsung projector also offers a wider stereo rendering for a more immersive sound. But it is especially in the field of connectivity that the Samsung LSP7T stands out, with all the functions of a SMART TV and even Bluetooth transmission. This is all the more remarkable as it is €500 cheaper… During the desert car chase scenes, during the day before Max escaped and at night when he joined Furiosa’s team, the light management is impressive. The entire gray scale is perfectly harnessed to provide a very nuanced image. The manufacturer’s HDR Pro technology, which is responsible for tone mapping (matching the HDR shades of the recording with the projector’s HDR capabilities) is particularly effective here.
